‘Fix’ for slow email client on a Samsung Galaxy S

November 23rd, 2010 | Categories: Android | Tags:

I bought a Samsung Galaxy S recently as a replacement for my dying HTC Hero and am mostly very pleased with it.  However, the built in email client is so slow that it’s embarrassing!  The Google Mail app is fine but the one that’s simply called Email does not work well for me at all which is a shame because that’s the app that I use to access my work email.

The ‘fix’ that I ended up doing isn’t really a fix at all because all I did was install the free K-9 mail client and use that instead.  It’s so much faster that it borders on the insane.  Just search for K9 mail in the Android Marketplace.

I’ll second the recommendation for K-9. The factory-installed Email app on my Motorola Droid doesn’t work well at all, but I’ve been very happy since I switched to K-9.

Does the factory-installed Email app actually work with UoM Exchange server? I can’t get it to connect at all (it complains about the phone not having certain required security features). This is on a non-rooted Froyo 2.2 SGS.

    Hi George

No idea. I had all sorts of problems getting my various devices to work with Exchange so I emailed the support team and asked them to enable IMAP access to my account. Haven’t looked back since.

    Cheers,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,

Yes, I have IMAP access (for linux desktop use mainly). Thought I’d try the proper Exchange thing from the SGS so I can see group calendars etc. Looks like it is something to do with Device Administrators. Some digging will be required. I set up somebody’s iPhone today to give them Exchange access but can’t do my own droid!

    cheers,
    George

I’ve tried anything to make the mail program on the samsung gs work but no luck! Just use another program. k-9 is perfect!
