{"id":97,"date":"2008-04-16T11:28:54","date_gmt":"2008-04-16T10:28:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?p=97"},"modified":"2008-04-16T11:28:55","modified_gmt":"2008-04-16T10:28:55","slug":"the-sphenic-numbers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/walkingrandomly.com\/?p=97","title":{"rendered":"The Sphenic Numbers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sci-lib.net\/index.php\">30th edition of the Carnival of Mathematics<\/a>, the author mentioned that 30 is the first Sphenic number.  I had never heard the term before so I thought I would investigate them a bit &#8211; nothing serious, just a bit of googling.  The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sphenic_number\">Wikipedia page<\/a> was the first hit and this told me that Sphenic Numbers are positive integers that are the product of three distinct primes.<\/p>\n<p>The article also demonstrated that Sphenic Numbers have exactly 8 divisors and gave some other bits of trivia such as the largest known example of a Sphenic Number (the product of the 3 largest known primes).  There was also a link to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.research.att.com\/~njas\/sequences\/A007304\">sequence of sphenic numbers<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.research.att.com\/~njas\/sequences\/Seis.html\">The On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences<\/a> and that was about it.  Oddly for something so elementary &#8211; there was nothing about Sphenic Numbers on <a href=\"http:\/\/mathworld.wolfram.com\/\">Mathworld<\/a> although this may change now that my <a href=\"http:\/\/demonstrations.wolfram.com\/FactoringTheSphenicNumbers\/\">Wolfram Demonstration on Sphenic Numbers<\/a> has been published.<\/p>\n<p>I was curious about what had written about Sphenic numbers in the literature so I <a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.google.com\/scholar?hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;client=firefox-a&amp;q=%22sphenic+numbers%22&amp;btnG=Search\">googled the term on Google Scholar<\/a>  &#8211; amazingly there was not a <strong>single <\/strong>hit.  So it seems that these numbers were considered important enough by someone to give them their own name but no one has then used that name in the literature&#8230;.EVER!<\/p>\n<p>How about books?  Searching for &#8220;Sphenic Numbers&#8221; in Google Books also results in no hits.  &#8220;Sphenic Number&#8221; results in one hit for a book called &#8220;Worlds of If&#8221; &#8211; No preview is available and the only quote you can get is <font size=\"-1\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.2em\">&#8220;A <strong>sphenic number<\/strong> is one with unequal factors&#8221;<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p>So &#8211; Where on earth did the name come from?  Wikipedia says that its from the old greek word &#8216;sphen&#8217; which means wedge but what I really want to know is who first gave these numbers this name?  Why are there no references to the name in the literature?
