{"id":65,"date":"2008-02-14T01:11:00","date_gmt":"2008-02-14T00:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?p=65"},"modified":"2011-02-11T12:56:18","modified_gmt":"2011-02-11T11:56:18","slug":"the-broken-heart-tangram","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/walkingrandomly.com\/?p=65","title":{"rendered":"The Broken Heart Tangram"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I imagine that most of the people reading this will know what the <a href=\"http:\/\/tangrams.ca\/\">Tangram puzzle<\/a> is but just in case you are not one of them here is a quick excerpt  from the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tangram\">Wikipedia page<\/a> which says it all:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Tangram<\/strong> (<a title=\"Chinese language\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chinese_language\">Chinese<\/a>: <span lang=\"zh\" xml:lang=\"zh\">\u4e03\u5de7\u677f<\/span>; <a title=\"Pinyin\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pinyin\">pinyin<\/a>: <span lang=\"pny\" xml:lang=\"pny\">q\u012b qi\u01ceo b\u01cen<\/span>; literally &#8220;seven boards of skill&#8221;) is a <a title=\"Dissection puzzle\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dissection_puzzle\">dissection puzzle<\/a>. It consists of seven pieces, called <em>tans<\/em>, which fit together to form a shape of some sort. The objective is to form a specific shape with seven pieces. The shape has to contain all the pieces, which may not overlap. &#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The classical Tangram puzzle looks like this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"tangram\" src=\"\/images\/games\/tangram.png\" alt=\"tangram\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is possible to make many shapes from these pieces; some of which are below (taken from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tangram\">tangrams.ca<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Tangram shapes\" src=\"\/images\/games\/asso1.gif\" alt=\"Tangram shapes\" width=\"529\" height=\"233\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you would like to have a go at making your own Tangram shapes then you can make your own Tangram set out of paper, buy a nice <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.co.uk%2FPuzzle-This-Ancient-Tangrams%2Fdp%2FB000LICL2Q%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dgateway%26qid%3D1202552683%26sr%3D8-4&amp;tag=walkingrandom-21&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=6738\">wooden one<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.co.uk\/e\/ir?t=walkingrandom-21&amp;l=ur2&amp;o=2\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/>, try this <a href=\"http:\/\/standards.nctm.org\/document\/eexamples\/chap4\/4.4\/index.htm\">java applet<\/a> or use this <a href=\"http:\/\/demonstrations.wolfram.com\/Tangram\/\">Mathematica demonstration<\/a> (written by <span class=\"relatedLink\">Enrique Zeleny<\/span>) using the free <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wolfram.com\/products\/player\/download.cgi\">Mathplayer<\/a> from Wolfram Research.  There is even a Tangram game for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.co.uk%2F505-Games-Tangram-Mania-DS%2Fdp%2FB000ZP1ZKO%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dgateway%26qid%3D1202553709%26sr%3D8-11&amp;tag=walkingrandom-21&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=6738\">Nintendo DS<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.co.uk\/e\/ir?t=walkingrandom-21&amp;l=ur2&amp;o=2\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/>!<\/p>\n<p>In the week leading up to Valentine&#8217;s day I wondered if there is a standard variation of the classical Tangram puzzle that is constructed from a heart shape and I was delighted to discover that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.objects-of-design.com\/products1\/454\/14\/tangram-heart-puzzle.htm\">there is<\/a>.  Using Enrique&#8217;s Mathematica code as a starting point I wrote a demonstration called <a href=\"http:\/\/demonstrations.wolfram.com\/BrokenHeartTangram\/\">Broken Heart Tangram<\/a> and it was published on the Wolfram Demonstrations site today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"heart tangram\" src=\"\/images\/games\/heart.gif\" alt=\"heart tangram\" width=\"524\" height=\"511\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I hope you have fun with this demonstration and would love to see some of the shapes that you come up with.
