The Sheffield Open Data Science Initiative<\/strong><\/p>\n

The University of Sheffield Open Data Science Initiative<\/a>\u00a0(ODSI) is really starting to take off. So what is it?<\/p>\n

From the website, the aims of the ODSI are:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Make new analysis methodologies available as widely and rapidly as possible with as few conditions on their use as possible (see the ML@SITraN group software pages<\/a> and the local software page<\/a>).<\/li>\n
  2. Educate our commercial, scientific and medical partners in the use of these latest methodologies (see http:\/\/gpss.cc<\/a>)<\/li>\n
  3. Act to achieve a balance between data sharing for societal benefit and the right of an individual to own their data. (see our summary of our efforts in public understanding and debate<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    My role within this initiative is to work on various aspects of research software throughout the University of Sheffield (and beyond!). I am a fellow of the Software Sustainability Institute<\/a> and you could sum up\u00a0everything I try to do with their motto Better Software, Better Research<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Join us on October 20th 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n

    We have just started a programme of events which aims to bring together a wide variety of people interested in data<\/strong>, machine learning <\/strong>and\u00a0research software<\/strong> (my favourite part!). The first such event is at The Data Hide on October 2015 at University of Sheffield.<\/p>\n

    There will be\u00a0talk on\u00a0Research Data Management for Computational Science\u00a0<\/b>by @ctjacobs_uk<\/a>\u00a0as well as lightning talks: What Kind of AI are we Creating?<\/strong>\u00a0by @lawrennd<\/a>,\u00a0Machine Learning for Chemical Simulations<\/strong>\u00a0by Chris Handley and a demonstration of how great Reveal.js<\/a> is by me.<\/p>\n

    This will be followed by food, beer and an opportunity to chat and geek out.<\/p>\n
