{"id":5063,"date":"2013-08-01T15:26:34","date_gmt":"2013-08-01T14:26:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?p=5063"},"modified":"2013-08-02T09:42:58","modified_gmt":"2013-08-02T08:42:58","slug":"which-ultrabook-for-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/walkingrandomly.com\/?p=5063","title":{"rendered":"Which Ultrabook for 2013?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am currently in the market for a new thin and light laptop; the things that everyone seems to be calling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.intel.co.uk\/content\/www\/uk\/en\/sponsors-of-tomorrow\/ultrabook.html\">ultrabooks<\/a> these days.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s what I&#8217;ve considered so far and the major good\/bad points from my point of view.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2013\/07\/17\/review_apple_macbook_air_11_inch_2013\/\">2013 Macbook Air<\/a>: <strong>Good:<\/strong> Fantastic hardware specs including Haswell and Intel HD 5000. I&#8217;ll get an educational discount.<strong> Bad:<\/strong> No touchscreen, I&#8217;m not interested in OS X. No tablet mode.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.techspot.com\/review\/696-lenovo-ideapad-yoga-11s\/\">Lenovo Yoga 11s<\/a>.\u00a0 <strong>Good:<\/strong> Both a tablet and a laptop but it&#8217;s a laptop first and a tablet second.\u00a0 <strong>Bad:<\/strong> Only 3rd generation Intel.\u00a0 Weird to hold in laptop mode because your fingers are mashing the keyboard.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/dell-now-shipping-xps-12-ultrabooktablet-with-intel-haswell-processors-7000018018\/\">Haswell based Dell XPS 12<\/a>.\u00a0 <strong>Good:<\/strong>Haswell. Beautiful mechanism for switching between tablet\/laptop. <strong>Bad:<\/strong> Only Intel HD 4400 graphics compared to the Air&#8217;s Intel HD 5000.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/reviews.cnet.co.uk\/laptops\/dell-xps-12-review-50009038\/\">heard<\/a> that the connection between computer and screen is <strong>unencrypte<\/strong>d <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/WiDi\">WiDi.<\/a> Possibly just FUD but its putting me off right now.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/news\/samsung-ativ-book-9-plus-lite,23737.html\">Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus<\/a> <strong>Good: <\/strong>Haswell. Amazing display resolution.<strong> Bad: <\/strong>Much higher resolution than the Macbook Air but with weaker GPU (Intel HD 4400)&#8211;that surely can&#8217;t be a good combination? No tablet mode. Win 8 doesn&#8217;t handle such high\u00a0 resolution screens well but should be fixed in 8.1.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/news\/samsung-ativ-q-ultrabook-preview-review,23619.html\">Samsung Ativ Q<\/a>: <strong>Good:<\/strong> Haswell. Amazing display resolution. Tablet mode.Win 8+Android.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0Bad<\/strong>: No trackpad.
