{"id":4774,"date":"2013-02-04T18:33:42","date_gmt":"2013-02-04T17:33:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?p=4774"},"modified":"2013-02-05T10:47:44","modified_gmt":"2013-02-05T09:47:44","slug":"a-month-of-math-software-january-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/walkingrandomly.com\/?p=4774","title":{"rendered":"A Month of Math Software &#8211; January 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?cat=47\">Month of Math Software <\/a>for 2013.\u00a0\u00a0January\u00a0was a\u00a0rather lean month in the world of mathematica software I&#8217;m afraid but there are a few things worthy of attention.\u00a0 If you have some news for me for next month&#8217;s edition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?page_id=2055\">contact me <\/a>via the usual channels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Commerical computer algebra<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>PTC have released a cut-down version of Mathcad Prime called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ptc.com\/product\/mathcad\/free-trial\/\">Mathcad Express<\/a>.\u00a0 It was actually <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ptc.com\/2012\/10\/29\/desktop-engineering-ptc-mathcad-express-free-for-life\/\">launched back in October 2012<\/a> but I only learned about it this month.\u00a0 Regular readers of WalkingRandomly will also know about <a href=\"http:\/\/en.smath.info\/forum\/yaf_postst1447_SMath-Studio-0-95-4594--30-July-2012.aspx\">SMath Studio<\/a>, a freeware application that looks a bit like a clone of Mathcad and runs on many operating systems.<\/li>\n<li>Wolfram Research have released Mathematica 9.0.1, a minor upgrade from version 9.\u00a0 To see what&#8217;s new take a look at Wolfram&#8217;s quick revision history <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wolfram.com\/mathematica\/quick-revision-history.html\">http:\/\/www.wolfram.com\/mathematica\/quick-revision-history.html<\/a>\u00a0(Thanks to people in the comments section for this link)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Python<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pandas, a data analysis library for Python, saw a minor update to version 0.10.1.\u00a0 See the pandas <a href=\"http:\/\/pandas.pydata.org\/pandas-docs\/dev\/whatsnew.html\">&#8216;What&#8217;s new?&#8217;<\/a> page for more details.<\/li>\n<li>Version 5.6 of the Python-based computer algebra system, SAGE, has been released.\u00a0 See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sagemath.org\/mirror\/src\/changelogs\/sage-5.6.txt\">the changelog<\/a> for details of the new stuff.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>C++<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\" http:\/\/code.google.com\/p\/blaze-lib\/\">Blaze<\/a> is <em>&#8220;an open-source, high-performance C++ math library for dense and sparse arithmetic&#8221;<\/em> and it has seen its second release.\u00a0 Head over to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/code.google.com\/p\/blaze-lib\/downloads\/list\">Blaze&#8217;s website<\/a> to grab yourself a copy of version 1.1.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Shiny<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Shiny wasn&#8217;t released in January but this was the first month I heard about it and it looks fantastic.\u00a0 Brought to my attention by long time WalkingRandomly reader, &#8216;MySchizoBuddy&#8217;, Shiny is brought to us from the creators of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rstudio.com\/\">RStudio<\/a>.\u00a0 In his words &#8216;It\u2019s similar to Mathematica\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wolfram.co.uk\/cdf-player\/\">CDF plugin <\/a>but without the plugin.
