{"id":4203,"date":"2012-04-13T11:33:51","date_gmt":"2012-04-13T10:33:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?p=4203"},"modified":"2012-04-13T11:33:51","modified_gmt":"2012-04-13T10:33:51","slug":"mathematics-in-stained-glass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/walkingrandomly.com\/?p=4203","title":{"rendered":"Mathematics in stained glass"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I work in a beautiful old building at The University of Manchester called <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sackville_Street_%28Manchester%29\">The Sackville Street Building<\/a>.\u00a0 Yesterday, I took part in a very interesting historical tour of the building and was astonished at the amount of beautiful things that I had never noticed before and yet walk past every day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For example, I was delighted to discover that one of the stained glass windows in the great hall was themed around mathematics (thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/onwardmanchester.com\/\">Samantha Bradey<\/a> for the original image which I&#8217;ve heavily compressed for this blog post)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/images\/random\/great_hall_sackville.png\" alt=\"Mathematics stained glass\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">While on the tour I posted a <a href=\"http:\/\/ow.ly\/i\/yQk5\">quick snap of the above window to twitter<\/a> using my mobile phone and received some nice feedback along with a\u00a0 few pictures of other mathematical windows.\u00a0 It turns out that Manchester&#8217;s Nick Higham has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maths.manchester.ac.uk\/~higham\/photos\/univman\/060907-1327-28_9222.htm\">close up of the above window for example<\/a>.\u00a0 Also, <a href=\"http:\/\/people.maths.ox.ac.uk\/yatesc\/\">Kit Yates<\/a> tweeted about <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/Kit_Yates_Maths\/status\/190696052112883712\/photo\/1\">several<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/Kit_Yates_Maths\/status\/190696357542105088\/photo\/1\">mathematical<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/Kit_Yates_Maths\/status\/190696667861893120\/photo\/1\">windows<\/a> in Caius College, Cambridge, one of which is below (showing images related to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Venn\">Venn<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latin_square\">Fisher<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/images\/random\/kit_yates_cambridge_window.jpg\" alt=\"Caius College stained glass\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Do you know of any other examples of mathematics in stained glass?\u00a0 Feel free to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?page_id=2055\">contact me<\/a> and tell me all about it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I work in a beautiful old building at The University of Manchester called The Sackville Street Building.\u00a0 Yesterday, I took part in a very interesting historical tour of the building and was astonished at the amount of beautiful things that I had never noticed before and yet walk past every day.
