{"id":3965,"date":"2011-12-03T19:28:33","date_gmt":"2011-12-03T18:28:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?p=3965"},"modified":"2011-12-03T19:28:33","modified_gmt":"2011-12-03T18:28:33","slug":"a-month-of-math-software-%e2%80%93-november-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/walkingrandomly.com\/?p=3965","title":{"rendered":"A month of Math Software \u2013 November 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to Walking Randomly&#8217;s monthly look at what&#8217;s new in the world of mathematical software.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?p=3927\">Click here<\/a> for last month&#8217;s edition and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?cat=47\">check out the archive<\/a> for all previous editions.\u00a0 If you have some news about mathematical software and want to get it out to over 2,500 subscribers then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?page_id=2055\">contact me<\/a> and tell me all about it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>General mathematical software<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Python(x,y) has been <a href=\"http:\/\/pythonxynews.blogspot.com\/2011\/11\/pythonx-y-2721-released.html\">updated to version 2.7.2.1<\/a>.\u00a0 Python(x,y) is a free scientific and engineering development software  for  numerical computations, data analysis and data visualization<\/li>\n<li>Version 2.17-13 of the number theoretic package, Magma, has been released.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/magma.maths.usyd.edu.au\/magma\/releasenotes\/2\/17\/13\/\">Click here<\/a> to see what&#8217;s new.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/freemat.sourceforge.net\/\">Freemat<\/a>, a a free environment for rapid engineering,scientific prototyping and data processing similar to MATLAB, has seen its first major update in 2 years!\u00a0 The big news in version 4.1 is a Just In Time (JIT) compiler which should speed up code execution a great deal.\u00a0 There is also a significant improvement in Freemat&#8217;s ability to render multidimensional datasets thanks to integration of the Visualisation Toolkit (VTK).<\/li>\n<li>The Euler Math Toolbox has been updated to version 13.1.\u00a0 See the <a href=\"http:\/\/eumat.sourceforge.net\/versions\/version-13.html\">list of changes<\/a> for details of what&#8217;s new.<\/li>\n<li>Gnumeric saw a new major release in November with 1.11.0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/projects.gnome.org\/gnumeric\/announcements\/1.11\/gnumeric-1.11.0.shtml\">click here for changes<\/a>) closely followed by some bug fixes in 1.11.1 (<a href=\"http:\/\/projects.gnome.org\/gnumeric\/announcements\/1.11\/gnumeric-1.11.1.shtml\">changes here<\/a>).\u00a0 Gnumeric is a free spreadsheet program for Linux and Windows.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Linear Algebra<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>LAPACK, The Fortran based linear algebra library that forms the bedrock of functionality in countless software applications,\u00a0 has been updated to version 3.4.0.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.netlib.org\/lapack\/lapack-3.4.0.html\">Click here<\/a> for the release notes.<\/li>\n<li>MAGMA, A linear algebra library that is <em>&#8220;similar to LAPACK but for heterogeneous\/hybrid architectures, starting with current &#8220;Multicore+GPU&#8221; systems.&#8221;<\/em> has been <a href=\"http:\/\/icl.cs.utk.edu\/magma\/news\/news.html?id=278\">updated to version 1.1<\/a><\/li>\n<li>PLASMA, The Parallel Linear Algebra for Scalable Multi-core Architectures, has been updated to version 2.4.5.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/icl.cs.utk.edu\/plasma\/news\/news.html?id=281\">Click here<\/a> for what&#8217;s new.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>New Products<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>AccelerEyes have released a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.accelereyes.com\/products\/ArrayFire\">new product called ArrayFire<\/a> &#8211; a free CUDA and OpenCL library for C, C++, Fortran, and Python<\/li>\n<li>CULA Tools released a new product called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.culatools.com\/sparse\/\">CULA Sparse<\/a> which is a GPU-accelerated library for linear algebra that provides iterative solvers for sparse systems.\u00a0 They&#8217;ve also released a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.culatools.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/29\/introducing-the-cula-sparse-demo\/\">demo application<\/a> to allow you to try the product out for free.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Vital Statistics<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>R version 2.14.0 has been released with a <a href=\"https:\/\/stat.ethz.ch\/pipermail\/r-announce\/2011\/000544.html\">host of new features<\/a>.\u00a0 If you do any kind of statistical computing then R is the free, open source solution for you!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Pretty plots<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Originlabs have updated their commercial windows plotting packages, Origin and OriginPro to version 8.6.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.originlab.com\/index.aspx?go=Company\/NewsAndEvents\/PressRoom&amp;pid=1820\">press release<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A new incremental update of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gnuplot.info\/\">GNUPlot<\/a>, a free multiplatform plotting package, has been released.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gnuplot.info\/announce.4.4.4\">The release announcement<\/a> tells us what new goodies we get in version 4.4.4.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Mobile<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One of the best mobile mathematical applications that money can buy, SpaceTime, has released a new version for iOS and Mac OS X and changed its name to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mathstudio.net\/\">Math Studio<\/a>.\u00a0 Not to be confused with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smathstudio.com\/\">SMathStudio<\/a>, another mobile mathematical application that is a clone of MathCad.<\/li>\n<li>The guys behind the excellent Android based Python\/Sympy app &#8211;
