All previous editions can be found at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?cat=47\">Month of Math Software Archives<\/a>.\u00a0 If you have some mathematical software news for the November 2011 edition then feel free to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?page_id=2055\">contact me<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>General Mathematics and Statistics<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>After being in beta for a while, version 4 of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geogebra.org\/cms\/\">GeoGebra<\/a> has been released.\u00a0 I confess that I&#8217;ve never used it but it looks great and it&#8217;s free!<\/li>\n<li>Wolfram&#8217;s Mathematica has seen a minor update with version 8.0.4.\u00a0 The previous version was 8.0.1 and the list of changes between the two is <a href=\"http:\/\/groups.google.com\/group\/comp.soft-sys.math.mathematica\/browse_thread\/thread\/e78794bb69931230?pli=1\">given here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The free MATLAB clone, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gnu.org\/software\/octave\/\">Octave<\/a>, has seen a bug-fix upgrade with version 3.4.3.<\/li>\n<li>Version 2.17.12 of the computational algebra package, Magma, has been released.\u00a0 The change log is at <a href=\"http:\/\/magma.maths.usyd.edu.au\/magma\/releasenotes\/2\/17\/12\/\">http:\/\/magma.maths.usyd.edu.au\/magma\/releasenotes\/2\/17\/12\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Rene Grothmann has updated his <a href=\"http:\/\/eumat.sourceforge.net\/\">Euler Math Toolbox<\/a>, a numerical package that has some similarities to MATLAB, to version 12.9.  This new release includes the LSODA algorithm for stiff equations.\u00a0 He gives examples of the new functionality at <a href=\"http:\/\/euler.rene-grothmann.de\/Programs\/Examples\/Stiff%20Equation.html\">http:\/\/euler.rene-grothmann.de\/Programs\/Examples\/Stiff%20Equation.html<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Mathematics on GPUs<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jacket, the GPU-accelerated toolbox for MATLAB has been upgraded to version 1.8.2.\u00a0 The new functionality is listed at <a href=\"http:\/\/wiki.accelereyes.com\/wiki\/index.php\/Release_Notes#09.2F29.2F2011_-v1.8.2\">http:\/\/wiki.accelereyes.com\/wiki\/index.php\/Release_Notes#09.2F29.2F2011_-v1.8.2<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Mark 0.5 of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nag.co.uk\/numeric\/gpus\/doc.asp\">Numberical Algorithms Group&#8217;s GPU library<\/a> has been released.\u00a0 This new version includes routines such as LU factorization, Cholesky factorization and random numbers from the Gamma distribution.\u00a0 One piece of good news is that the library is currently free for academic use.<\/li>\n<li>The AMD Core Math Library for Graphic Processors (ACML-GPU) was <a href=\"http:\/\/developer.amd.com\/libraries\/acmlgpu\/Pages\/default.aspx\">discontinued this month<\/a>&#8230;.superseded by the A<a href=\"http:\/\/developer.amd.com\/libraries\/appmathlibs\/Pages\/default.aspx\">MD Accelerated Parallel Processing Math Libraries (APPML)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Scientific Plotting<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Matplotlib is a very capable plotting library for the Python programming language and it has just been updated.\u00a0 Version 1.1 has lots of nice new features and you can read about them all at <a href=\"http:\/\/matplotlib.sourceforge.net\/users\/whats_new.html\">http:\/\/matplotlib.sourceforge.net\/users\/whats_new.html<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mps.mpg.de\/dislin\/overview.html\">DISLIN<\/a> is a plotting library that can be called from many languages including C and Fortran.\u00a0 October saw it updated to version 10.1.5 and you can see what&#8217;s new from DISLIN&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mps.mpg.de\/dislin\/news.html\">news page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Mobile Mathematics<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I discovered a couple of free MATLAB clones for Android this month &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?p=3908\">Addi<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/mathmatiz.blogspot.com\/\">Mathmatiz<\/a>.\u00a0 My favourite of the two is Addi, partly because Mathmatiz insists on serving me adverts while using it.\u00a0 I&#8217;d happily pay for a version of Mathmatiz that didn&#8217;t include adverts though!<\/li>\n<li>One mobile application that I&#8217;ve been meaning to mention for months is <a href=\"https:\/\/market.android.com\/details?id=com.funmath.mathscript&amp;hl=en\">MathScript<\/a>.\u00a0 This Android based application allows you to write and run python programs directly on your device.\u00a0 It also comes with some basic plotting functionality and a full version of <a href=\"http:\/\/sympy.org\/\">SymPy<\/a> which turns it into a very capable mathematical compute engine.<\/li>\n<li>Maplesoft have released <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mapleprimes.com\/maplesoftblog\/127071-Maple-And-The-IPad?sp=127071\">The Maple Player for iPad <\/a>which allows interactive Maple documents to be used on Apple&#8217;s tablet devices.\u00a0 This first release comes with a few pre-installed documents that shows the sort of thing that the software is capable of.\u00a0 The initial set of topics includes Laplace Transforms, a function plotter, integration tutor and more.\u00a0 At the moment we can&#8217;t publish our own Maple documents to iPad but it looks like this is what Maplesoft are planning for the future.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to this month&#8217;s &#8216;A month of Math software.&#8217;\u00a0 If you missed the September edition then why not take a look at https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?p=3534.
