{"id":3534,"date":"2011-10-04T00:17:12","date_gmt":"2011-10-03T23:17:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?p=3534"},"modified":"2011-10-04T00:17:12","modified_gmt":"2011-10-03T23:17:12","slug":"a-month-of-math-software-september-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/walkingrandomly.com\/?p=3534","title":{"rendered":"A Month of Math Software &#8211; September 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to September&#8217;s A Month of Math Software.\u00a0 Last month&#8217;s can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?p=3794\">found here<\/a> and the archive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?cat=47\">is here<\/a>.\u00a0 If you&#8217;ve got news for next month&#8217;s edition then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?page_id=2055\">contact me<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>General mathematics and statistics<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The commercial computer algebra package, MAGMA, has been upgraded to version 2.17-11.\u00a0 The change log is at <a href=\"http:\/\/magma.maths.usyd.edu.au\/magma\/releasenotes\/2\/17\/11\/\">magma.maths.usyd.edu.au\/magma\/releasenotes\/2\/17\/11\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Version 2011b of MATLAB has been released.\u00a0 I&#8217;m all excited about the improved GPU functionality in the parallel computing toolbox along with the that fact that the MATLAB compiler now supports GPU-enabled code.\u00a0 This little combination means that we&#8217;ll be able to include a small amount of MATLAB\/GPU support on Manchester University&#8217;s Condor pool.\u00a0 If GPU support isn&#8217;t your thing then maybe you&#8217;d like to hear about <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/desktop\/2011\/10\/03\/comparison-tool-updates-in-r2011b\/\">updates to the MATLAB comparison tool<\/a> from Mike on the MATLAB Desktop.<\/li>\n<li>Version 2.13.2 of the extremely popular free, open source statistics pacakge, R, has been released.\u00a0 This is intended to be the last of the 2.13 series and you can find out what&#8217;s new by going to<a href=\"https:\/\/stat.ethz.ch\/pipermail\/r-announce\/2011\/000543.html\"> https:\/\/stat.ethz.ch\/pipermail\/r-announce\/2011\/000543.html<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Freely available linear algebra software<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jack Dongarra et al have updated their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.netlib.org\/utk\/people\/JackDongarra\/la-sw.html\">survey of freely available software for linear algebra.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Version 2.4.2 of PLASMA (Parallel Linear Algebra for Scalable Multi-core Architectures) has been released.\u00a0 Click <a href=\"http:\/\/icl.cs.utk.edu\/plasma\/news\/news.html?id=275\">here for a list of the new stuff<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Math software in the blogs<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/sagemath.blogspot.com\/2011\/08\/sage-creating-viable-free-open-source.html\">Sage: Creating a Viable Free Open Source Alternative to Magma, Maple, Mathematica, and MATLAB<\/a> &#8211; a blog post by Sage&#8217;s creator, William Stein<\/li>\n<li>Robert Talbert asks <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/blognetwork\/castingoutnines\/2011\/09\/13\/math-monday-taking-the-fundamental-theorem-challenge\/\">questions about the fundamental theorem of calculus<\/a> while looking at Maple, Mathematica and Wolfram Alpha.\u00a0 On a related note I had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?p=3879\">fun with an integral with MATLAB and Mathematica<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><em>&#8220;Neil Bickford calculated the first 458 million terms for the continued  fraction of pi, breaking the previous record of 180 million.
