If you have any math software news or reviews that you&#8217;d like included in next month&#8217;s edition then feel free to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?page_id=2055\">contact me.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Releases &#8211; Commercial<\/strong><br \/>\nMagma V2.17-5 has been released and the <a href=\"http:\/\/magma.maths.usyd.edu.au\/magma\/releasenotes\/2\/17\/5\/\">list of changes is here<\/a>.  Magma is a large software package designed for computations in algebra, number theory, algebraic geometry and algebraic combinatorics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Releases \u2013 Open Source <\/strong><br \/>\nA major new version of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gnu.org\/software\/octave\/\">Octave<\/a>, a high quality, open-source alternative to MATLAB, has been released.  Version 3.4.0 has been available from February 8th and the changelog is available at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gnu.org\/software\/octave\/NEWS-3.4.html\">www.gnu.org\/software\/octave\/NEWS-3.4.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A new mathematics package for Mac OS X has been produced &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/web.me.com\/nicohirtt\/EureKalc\/English.html\">EureKalc 3<\/a>.\u00a0 Screenshot below.\u00a0 Currently at version 3.\u00df.02<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/web.me.com\/nicohirtt\/EureKalc\/English.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/images\/random\/EureKalc3.png\" alt=\"EureKalc3.png\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Version 11 beta of <a href=\"http:\/\/eumat.sourceforge.net\/\">Euler Math Toolbox<\/a> has been released with some new symbolic functionality.\u00a0 There is a blog post on the new functionality at <a href=\"http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/apps\/wordpress\/eumat\/2011\/02\/07\/version-11\/\">http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/apps\/wordpress\/eumat\/2011\/02\/07\/version-11\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A new stable release of <a href=\"http:\/\/projects.gnome.org\/gnumeric\/\">Gnumeric<\/a> (The spreadsheet component of GNOME Office) has been released.\u00a0 The new version is 1.10.3 and recent changes can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/projects.gnome.org\/gnumeric\/announcements\/1.10\/gnumeric-1.10.13.shtml\">http:\/\/projects.gnome.org\/gnumeric\/announcements\/1.10\/gnumeric-1.10.13.shtml<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Optimization<\/strong><br \/>\nProfessor Stan Uryasev from the University of Florida has produced a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ise.ufl.edu\/uryasev\/testproblems\/\"> website containing a suite of optimization test problems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Version 2 of<a href=\"http:\/\/www.maplesoft.com\/applications\/view.aspx?SID=101333\"> Sergey Moiseev&#8217;s free DirectSearch<\/a> optimization package for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maplesoft.com\/\">Maple<\/a> has been released.   The DirectSearch package is a collection of commands to numerically compute local and global minimums (maximums) of nonlinear multivariate function with (without) constraints.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blog articles about math software<\/strong><br \/>\nMona Zeftel has written an article on PTC&#8217;s Mathcad Engineering blog about <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ptc.com\/bid\/35854\/Analyze-Data-with-new-Box-Plots-in-Mathcad-15-and-Prime-1-0\">Mathcad&#8217;s new box plots<\/a> including How-Tos for both Mathcad 15 and Mathcad Prime 1.0.<\/p>\n<p>The Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG) discusses the double-edged sword of SSE instructions in <a href=\"http:\/\/thenumericalalgorithmsgroup.blogspot.com\/2011\/02\/wandering-precision.html\">Wandering Precision<\/a>.\u00a0 SSE instructions can make your numerical algorithms significantly faster but this comes at a price.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.exploringbinary.com\/nondeterministic-floating-point-conversions-in-java\/\">Non Deterministic Floating Point conversions in Java<\/a>.\u00a0 More SSE weirdness; a very detailed article that explains an odd bug in Java on certain architectures.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last month I started a new feature called a Month of Math Software and since it turned out to be quite popular I thought I&#8217;d do it again.
