January 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I tend to keep an eye out for news relating to mathematical software and thought that I&#8217;d start sharing my monthly notebook with the world in case it proved to be useful to anyone else.\u00a0 If you have any math-software news that you&#8217;d like to share then feel free to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?page_id=2055\">contact me<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Releases &#8211; Commercial<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mathcad Prime 1.0 has been released by PTC who have almost completely rewrote it from scratch.\u00a0 Interestingly, you get a version of Mathcad 15.0 thrown in for free when you buy a copy.\u00a0 See my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?p=2884\">discussion of this new version here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>MAGMA v2.17-3 has been released and the <a href=\"http:\/\/magma.maths.usyd.edu.au\/magma\/releasenotes\/2\/17\/3\/\">changelog is here<\/a>.\u00a0 Magma is a large software package designed for computations in algebra, number theory, algebraic geometry and algebraic combinatorics.<\/p>\n<p>Version 12 of the popular plotting package, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sigmaplot.com\/\">Sigmaplot<\/a>, has been released.\u00a0 The press release is at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sigmaplot.com\/aboutus\/pressroom_details.php?link=jan-2010\">www.sigmaplot.com\/aboutus\/pressroom_details.php?link=jan-2010<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Releases &#8211; Open Source<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A bug-fix version of <a href=\"http:\/\/matplotlib.sourceforge.net\/\">Matplotlib<\/a> has been released &#8211; version 1.0.1 &#8211; and the <a href=\"http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/matplotlib\/files\/matplotlib\/matplotlib-1.0.1\/RELEASE_NOTES-1.0.1.txt\/download\">changelog is available on sourceforge<\/a>.\u00a0 Matplotlib is a 2D plotting library for Python.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sagemath.org\/\">SAGE<\/a> 4.6.1 has been released.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sagemath.org\/mirror\/src\/changelogs\/sage-4.6.1.txt\">detailed changelog is here<\/a>.\u00a0 SAGE&#8217;s mission is &#8220;<em>Creating a viable free open source alternative to Magma, Maple, Mathematica and Matlab<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dealii.org\/\">deal.II<\/a> version 7 has been released. <acronym>deal.II<\/acronym> is a C++ program library targeted at the computational solution of partial differential equations using adaptive finite elements.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/jquant\/files\/JQuantLib\/\">JQuantlibLib<\/a> version 0.2.4 released.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/forums.jquantlib.org\/viewtopic.php?f=16&amp;t=13\">Details here<\/a>.\u00a0 JQuantLib is a BSD Licensed, open-source, comprehensive framework for quantitative finance, written in Java.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mobile Math Software<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wolfram Research have released a trio of iPhone apps called <a href=\"http:\/\/products.wolframalpha.com\/courseassistants\/\">Course Assistants<\/a>.\u00a0 Essentially these are nice user interfaces to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wolframalpha.com\/\">Wolfram Alpha<\/a> that make it easier to use in specific subject domains.\u00a0 The initial offering consists of Algebra, Calculus and Music Theory.\u00a0 Stephen Wolfram has <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.stephenwolfram.com\/2011\/01\/an-app-for-every-course-and-more\/\">blogged about the new apps<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MATLAB software community<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Mathworks have launched a MATLAB-specific question and answer site called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mathworks.com\/matlabcentral\/answers\/\">MATLAB Answers<\/a>.\u00a0 In conjunction with the venerable <a href=\"http:\/\/groups.google.com\/group\/comp.soft-sys.matlab\/topics\">comp.soft-sys.matlab<\/a> newsgroup and the more recent <a href=\"http:\/\/stackoverflow.com\/questions\/tagged\/matlab\">Stack Overflow<\/a>, MATLABers now have more question and answer resources than ever.\u00a0 The Matworks have a <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/desktop\/2011\/01\/24\/introducing-matlab-answers\/\">blog article about the new service<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New Books<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lulu.com\/product\/paperback\/introduction-to-high-performance-scientific-computing\/14605649\">Introduction to Scientific Computing<\/a> by Victor Eijkhout.\u00a0 You can download it for free or get a printed copy for under 12 pounds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I tend to keep an eye out for news relating to mathematical software and thought that I&#8217;d start sharing my monthly notebook with the world in case it proved to be useful to anyone else.\u00a0 If you have any math-software news that you&#8217;d like to share then feel free to contact me.
