{"id":2801,"date":"2010-08-11T12:07:38","date_gmt":"2010-08-11T11:07:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?p=2801"},"modified":"2010-08-16T10:02:01","modified_gmt":"2010-08-16T09:02:01","slug":"academic-journals-that-contain-easier-material","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/walkingrandomly.com\/?p=2801","title":{"rendered":"Academic journals that contain easier material"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back when I was doing my own research (my field was <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Photonic_crystal\">photonic crystals<\/a>), I read a lot of research articles in journals such as <a href=\"http:\/\/prb.aps.org\/browse\">Physical Review B<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opticsinfobase.org\/ao\/Issue.cfm\">Applied Optics<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opticsinfobase.org\/josab\/Issue.cfm\">The Journal of the Optical Society of America B<\/a>.\u00a0 These journals represent the state of the art in their respective fields and if you are not a full time researcher then you will probably find many of their articles difficult to <strong>really<\/strong> get into.\u00a0 When I say &#8216;really get into&#8217; I mean &#8216;understand well enough that you could reproduce or develop their results if you wanted to&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>These days I am not a full-time researcher (although I do assist many of them on a regular basis) but I still like to read journal articles.\u00a0 The type of journal I read, however, has changed rather a lot since I&#8217;m doing it for fun and personal interest rather than for my salary.\u00a0 I sometimes take what I read in these articles and turn them into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?p=1471\">blog posts<\/a> and\/or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?p=133\">Wolfram Demonstrations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a list of some of my favourites<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/0143-0807\">European Journal of Physics<\/a>: According to their website &#8220;The primary mission of <em>European Journal of Physics<\/em> is to assist  in maintaining and improving the standard of taught physics in  universities and other institutes of higher education.&#8221;\u00a0 There&#8217;s lots of cool stuff to be found with past articles including <a href=\"http:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/0143-0807\/30\/6\/S03\">The Kaye effect<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/0143-0807\/31\/5\/009\">Mean Free Path in Soccer and Gases<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/0143-0807\/31\/5\/013\">Cooling and warming laws: an exact analytical solution<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.maa.org\/pubs\/cmj.html\">The College Mathematics Journal<\/a>: According to their website &#8220;<em>The College Mathematics Journal<\/em> is designed to enhance classroom learning and stimulate thinking regarding undergraduate mathematics.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org\/action\/showPublication?journalCode=mathgaze\">The Mathematical Gazette<\/a>: I could spend all day browsing through the archives of this one &#8211; it&#8217;s a math nerds dream.\u00a0 For example, when you read an article written in 1894 with the title &#8216;<strong>Some old Text-Books<\/strong>&#8216; you know that they are going to be <strong>really<\/strong> old! It&#8217;s also fun to compare the &#8216;problems and solutions&#8217; from 1900 to those from 2000.\u00a0 From the website &#8220;<cite>The Mathematical Gazette<\/cite> is the original journal of the Mathematical Association and it is now over a century old&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org\/action\/showPublication?journalCode=mathmaga\">Mathematics Magazine<\/a>: I&#8217;ve had one or two ideas for Wolfram Demonstrations from this magazine.\u00a0 From the website &#8220;<cite>Mathematics Magazine<\/cite> presents articles and notes on undergraduate mathematical topics&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What journals do you recommend for fun and\/or teaching purposes in areas such as physics, mathematics and statistics?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong> The following are recommendations from readers in the comments section.
