{"id":2748,"date":"2011-06-01T14:34:20","date_gmt":"2011-06-01T13:34:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?p=2748"},"modified":"2011-06-01T14:34:20","modified_gmt":"2011-06-01T13:34:20","slug":"a-month-of-math-software-may-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/walkingrandomly.com\/?p=2748","title":{"rendered":"A Month of Math Software &#8211; May 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to the 5th installment of A Month of Math software where I take a look at all things math-software related.\u00a0 If I&#8217;ve missed something then let me know in the comments section.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Open Source releases<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sagemath.org\/\">SAGE<\/a>, possibly the best open-source mathematics package bar-none, has seen an upgrade to version 4.7. \u00a0The extensive change-log <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sagemath.org\/mirror\/src\/changelogs\/sage-4.7.txt\">is here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/numpy.scipy.org\/\">Numpy<\/a> 1.60 has been released. \u00a0Numpy is the fundamental package needed for scientific computing with Python\u00a0and the list of changes from the previous\u00a0version\u00a0can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/mail.scipy.org\/pipermail\/numpy-discussion\/2011-May\/056295.html\">in this discussion thread<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Version 1.15 of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gnu.org\/software\/gsl\/\">GSL (GNU Scientific Library)<\/a>, a free and open source numerical library for C and C++, has been released. \u00a0A copy of the change log<a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/images\/random\/gsl_115_new.txt\"> is here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scilab.org\/\">Scilab<\/a>, the premier open source alternative to MATLAB, has seen a new minor upgrade with 5.3.2. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scilab.org\/products\/scilab\/download\/5.3.2\/Changes-for-5.3.2\">Click here<\/a> to see the differences from version 5.3.1<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/gmplib.org\/\">GMP MP Bignum library<\/a> has been updated to version 5.0.2.\u00a0 GMP is a free library for arbitrary precision arithmetic, operating on signed integers, rational numbers, and floating point numbers.\u00a0 Check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/gmplib.org\/gmp5.0.html\">release notes<\/a> for what&#8217;s new.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Commercial releases<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nag.co.uk\/\">Numerical Algorithm&#8217;s Group (NAG)<\/a> have released version 0.4 of their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nag.co.uk\/numeric\/gpus\/index.asp\">CUDA accelerated numerical library<\/a>.\u00a0 You can&#8217;t actually buy it yet as far as I know but academics can get their hands on it for free by signing a collaborative agreement with NAG.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/magma.maths.usyd.edu.au\/magma\/\">Magma<\/a> seems to have a new release every month.\u00a0 See what&#8217;s new in <a href=\"http:\/\/magma.maths.usyd.edu.au\/magma\/releasenotes\/2\/17\/8\/\">version 2.17-8 here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Math Software in the blogsphere<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Sol Lederman has started a new blog called <a href=\"http:\/\/playingwithmathematica.com\/\">Playing with Mathematica<\/a>. \u00a0Lots of cool little demonstrations to be found such as the multiple pendulum animation below.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/playingwithmathematica.com\/2011\/05\/20\/friday-fun-2\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/images\/random\/animPendulum.gif\" alt=\"Animated pendulums\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gary Ernest Davis <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.republicofmath.com\/archives\/4821\">discusses Dijkstra\u2019s fusc function<\/a> &#8211; complete with Mathematica code.<\/p>\n<p>Alasdair looks at the <a href=\"http:\/\/amca01.wordpress.com\/2011\/05\/21\/sums-of-dice-throws\/\">sums of dice throws<\/a> using Sage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to the 5th installment of A Month of Math software where I take a look at all things math-software related.\u00a0 If I&#8217;ve missed something then let me know in the comments section.
