{"id":2,"date":"2007-08-04T10:49:33","date_gmt":"2007-08-04T09:49:33","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2021-07-08T14:48:43","modified_gmt":"2021-07-08T13:48:43","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/walkingrandomly.com\/?page_id=2","title":{"rendered":"About Me"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m Mike Croucher, Customer Success Engineer at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathworks.com\/\">MathWorks<\/a> where I work with researchers and\u00a0educators on many different aspects of research computing.<\/p>\n<p>My interests center around research software engineering, high performance and cloud computing and various aspects of machine learning, mathematics and science and I have over 20 years of experience in the field.<\/p>\n<p>Some of my career highlights include<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Developer Advocate and Product Manager for Cloud and Machine Learning at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nag.co.uk\/\">The Numerical Algorithms Group<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Head of Research IT at University of Leeds<\/li>\n<li>Co-founder of the University of <a href=\"https:\/\/rse.shef.ac.uk\/\">Sheffield\u2019s Research Software Engineering (RSE) group<\/a> \u2013 one of the first such groups in the UK.<\/li>\n<li>In 2015 I was the recipient of one the first EPSRC-funded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?p=6037\">Research Software Engineering Fellowships<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>I have been a strong advocate for the Research Software Engineering movement since its inception. I am a <a href=\"http:\/\/software.ac.uk\/fellows\/mike-croucher\">Fellow of the Software Sustainability Institute<\/a>. and was co-investigator on the <a href=\"https:\/\/gow.epsrc.ukri.org\/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP\/N028902\/1\">EPSRC RSE-Network grant<\/a> that helped bootstrap the <a href=\"https:\/\/society-rse.org\/\">International\u00a0RSE association<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Head of Research Applications Support at University of Manchester<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The common thread that binds together all of the roles throughout my career is that I work with the research community to enable them to do computation better.\u00a0 Alternatively, it could be thought of as therapy for a difficult PhD in computational physics.<\/p>\n<p>In this blog I write about things that I find interesting, useful or, ideally, both.
