Japanese firm buys Maplesoft

Maplesoft, developers of the popular computer algebra system – Maple, have been bought by Cybernet Systems Co., Ltd., a Tokyo-based major Japanese importer/distributor of CAE (computer aided engineering) software.  More details here.

I just hope that this turns out to be a good thing.  I like Maple and I don’t want it messed up!

According to this article things should stay the same for a while:

“Maplesoft will continue to operate as a separate entity with the same name, management team, product mix and number of employees, which currently stands at 125, Tina George, Maplesoft’s media relations manager, said in an interview. The company’s office is located on Kumpf Drive.

‘Cybernet has committed to continue things as they are for at least five years,’ she said.”

Thanks for that jp. Of course what people say and what they do can sometimes be different – let’s hope that Cybernet keeps to it’s word.

That’s the result of Wolfram’s clever marketing with all those pretty graphics nonsense demonstrations promotion campaign.

Even in science software good marketing, not only good product, counts…

    Farewell maple.

Hmm, not sure what to think of this. It’s not a hostile take over so things should move along nicely for a little while. We’ll see what sort of changes are forced in for Maple14. I’m sure it will be just like when Autodesk took over Maya. Things will change, some good, some bad. It would definitely be terrible if they got rid of the application center at maplesoft’s website. I’m sure the first things that people will immediately see changes will be on their website. And I sure hope to god the mapleprimes website does not dissappear. Those are the two things that should definitely not change. There are things they can touch up on and maybe add, but I sure hope they don’t go in a rewrite everything for 14, that would be a step backwards.
